Arrest in Trevose Hit-and-Run; Dog Attack: Woman Injured, Officer Shot; Campbell's Field No More

Police have arrested the suspect wanted for a deadly hit-and-run in Trevose last week. 48-year-old James Howell was taken into custody near 52nd Street and Haverford Ave. in West Philadelphia on Thursday. He is charged with accidents involving death or personal injury, accidents involving death or personal injury while not properly licensed, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, and duty to give information and render aid. The accident happened on Monday, November 27th around 8:15 p.m. along Street Road near Philmont Ave. 19-year-old Jess Kurtz and friend 18-year-old Will Vanarsdale were crossing the street when they were hit by a truck. Witnesses say the driver stopped briefly to help move Kurtz to the side of the road before he fled. Kurtz died from her injuries. Police recovered the truck last week. Howell is curently in Bucks County Prison being held on $250,000 bail.

An 80-year-old woman was severely injured and a responding officer hit by a bullet during a dog attack in North Philadelphia on Friday afternoon. It happened around 12:30 p.m. inside a home on the 2900 block of North Judson Street. Police responded to a 911 call about a dog attack. They found the elderly lady with severe injuries to her lower body. Officers were forced to shoot the dog. A bullet ricocheted and grazed one of the officers in the shin. 24-year-old Officer Kevin Fay was treated and released from the hospital. He is a 4 year veteran assigned to the 39th district. The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police say the dog belonged to the woman's granddaughter.

Campbell's Field on the waterfront in Camden, NJ will be torn down to make way for athletic fields for Rutgers University-Camden and the community. Rutgers agreed to invest $7.5 million in the redevelopment project. The city of Camden will seek state funding the rest of the $15 million project. The baseball stadium broke ground in 1999 and was called a field of dreams for the waterfront district. The 6,425-seat stadium hosted the Camden Riversharks from 2001-2015 until that team folded. Rutgers will build facilities for its NCAA Division III baseball team which currently plays in the stadium, as well as softball, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey teams. Camden students and residents will also be able to use the fields. No date has been set for the demolition.
