Former Philadelphia Phillies ace pitcher Roy Halladay died Tuesday when his Icon A5 small plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Halladay was the only one on board when the plane went down around Noon. Early reports were that the aircraft belonged to the pitcher, but confirmation of Halladay as the lone fatality came at a press conference this afternoon. Since retiring from baseball he has become an avid flyer. Twitter posts show he got this particular aircraft last month. "Doc" spent many years dominately the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays, winning the AL Cy Young in 2003. He made his mark in Philadelphia right away. His first season in 2010, Halladay won the NL Cy Young, threw a perfect game, and no-hit the Reds in the NLDS. He leaves behind a wife and two kids. He was 40.
The Phillies released this statement: "We are numb over the very tragic news about Roy Halladay's untimely death. There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to Brandy, Ryan and Braden."

A Pennsylvania State Trooper was shot and severely injured during a traffic stop on Tuesday morning. It happened around 10:15 a.m. on Route 33 near Route 191 in Plainfield Township, Northampton County. The corporal from Troop M in Belfast, PA, pulled over the driver in a 2008 blue Pontiac for speeding. He wrote him a ticket and told the driver he was free to go. When the trooper got back to his vehicle the driver had gotten back out of his and waved to the trooper. He had questions about the ticket. While talking with the driver, the trooper suspected that the driver may be under the influence. He called for backup and told the driver he was no longer free to go.
When backup arrived they began field sobriety tests, which the driver failed. The trooper went to arrest the man and that's when a violent struggle ensued. The driver was able to get free and run back to his car and retrieve a gun. The driver opened fire on the troopers, hitting the one several times. The troopers returned fire and hit the driver. He fled in his Pontiac and drove himself to Easton Hospital where he was placed into custody. The trooper was flown to St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown. He has already been in surgery, but remains in critical condition. The identities of the trooper and the driver have not been released.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued the following statement: "Frances and I are praying for this trooper, the family and every member of the Pennsylvania State Police. This senseless act of violence is a reminder of the sacrifices made daily by all our brave men and women in uniform. Across Pennsylvania, our troopers are keeping communities safe by putting themselves in harm's way. We must never forget that. I ask all Pennsylvanians to join us in keeping all those affected, especially the corporal, in their thoughts today."
Philadelphia Police are looking for two suspects after a University of Pennsylvania graduate student was severely beaten and robbed in University City on Friday. It happened around 10:45 p.m. on the 400 block of South 43rd Street. The 26-year-old victim was walking down the street when he was approached by the two suspects. He was was beaten, robbed, and left with skull fractures. The suspects were caught on surveillance camera at a convenience store later that night. The first suspect is described as late teens to early 20 years-of-age, approximately 6', slim build, with a chin-length braided hair. He was wearing a black Michael Kors jacket, red t-shirt, ripped blue jeans, white sneakers and a Ferragamo belt. The second suspect is described as black male, late teens to early 20 years-of-age, 5'6, slim build, with short cropped hair. He was wearing all black clothing with a distinct pattern on the front of his hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information should call University of Pennsylvania Police Department at 215-898-4485.
