Squatting Problem In Philly; Schuylkill Construction Causes Night Closure; Election Day 2017

Philadelphia's City Council will continue to debate the ongoing "squatting" problem that has been affecting many landlords and home owners throughout the city. The city council describes a squatter as a person who illegally occupies a home they don't own and or rent from. Councilmen Al Taubenberger and David Oh say that the major problem is the laws that are protecting the people who are illegally in the homes. Councilman Oh stated that the squatters have no penalty for their actions and are not responsible for the damage they cause. Councilman Oh's proposal is that the squatter is required to leave within 48 hours or they face a $300 a day fine and arrest. Oh's proposal did not make it out of the meeting on Monday, but Councilman Taubenberger said he will follow up with the DA's office to write up legislation.

Eastbound traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway at the 676 Interchange will be closed from 11 pm to 5 am everynight until Thursday as PennDOT crews begin to work on a multi-phase project. Crews will be working in different sections in order to keep the traffic moving as smoothly as possible during the day. Due to the closure, eastbound traffic will be directed to an exit at the 30th Street off-ramp, take you around 30th Street Station, to Chestnut and then make a right to turn onto the ramp for I-76 east. The construction is part of a $103 million Chestnut Street Bridge Replacement Project which will also repair and rebuild Schuylkill Avenue Bridges that are over I-76 between Market and Walnut Streets.

Today is election day in Philadelphia, and city officials want to make sure you are well informed when it comes to polling areas and proper procedures. Polls around the city will open up at 7 am and will close at 8 pm, but if you are in line at 8 pm, don't leave because you will still be able to vote as long as you're in line by 8 pm. You're polling area should not be located too far from your home, if you need help finding your area, visit (PA Voter Services). Identification is only needed for first time voters, or for first time voters at that designated polling area. Acceptable forms of ID include a state issued drivers license, federal or state issued ID, passport, military, employee or student ID as well. Philadelphia voters will be voting for both statewide and citywide candidates including a new District Attorney for the city of Philadelphia.
