Turnpike Northeast Extension Closed; Tweens Steal From Mail Truck; Marine Running 31 Marathons

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will close a long stretch of the Northeast Extension this weekend so crews can replace a bridge. The highway will be closed for a total of 55 hours between the Lehigh Valley Interchange, Exit #56, and the Mahoning Valley Interchange, Exit #74. The closure will start on Friday, October 13th at 9 p.m. and end on Monday October 16th at 4 a.m. Crews are replacing a 60-year-old bridge over Crackersport Road in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County at mile marker 57.7. Plan ahead, the detour will likely add 30-40 miles to the usual 35 mile trip.

Philadelphia Police say that three young tweens were caught stealing boxes from the back of a postal truck in West Philadelphia on Thursday. It happened around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Edgewood and Chester streets. The postal worker was out delivering mail and saw the three boys lift the tailgate and take several packages. The boys only ran about a half a block before they stopped to open the boxes. The found sneakers in one and women's garments in another. Responding police officers came upon the thieves while they were opening the boxes on the sidewalk. They split up and ran away. Officers were eventually able to capture all three of them. Stealing from a postal truck and tapering with mail are federal offenses.

A wounded Marine veteran made a stop in Philadelphia on Friday as part of his Month of Marathons. Rob Jones intends to run 31 marathons in 31 different cities in 31 consecutive days. Most of the runs will be marathon distance (26.2 miles) on his own and not part of an existing official race. Today's Philadelphia run along Kelly Drive was the second stop on his tour. He started on Thursday in London and heads to New York City tomorrow. Jones lost both of his legs in a IED attack in Afghanistan in 2010. In 2013, he rode 5,200 miles across the country on a bike. In addition to raising money for wounded veterans' charities, Jones hopes to raise awareness and set an example for the veteran community. He says that even if you come back wounded it doesn't mean that you are broken and you can contribute to society. So far he has raised $125,000 with a goal of $1 million.
