Big Contract for Sixers' Joel Embiid; Moore Township Closes All Schools; Deadly Accident NE Philly

The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have reportedly agreed on a five-year, $148-million designated rookie scale maximum contract extension. Embiid could earn as much as $178 million if he meets "Super Max" criteria such as being named to All-NBA teams or winning Defensive Player of the Year or League MVP. Embiid was selected #3 overall by the Sixers in the 2014 NBA Draft, however, injuries have held him off the court. He's only appeared in 31 time-restricted games. He has been cleared for 5-on-5 drills in practice. The Sixers hope he will play on opening night. This contract ensures he'll be a big part of the team going forward.

The Monroe Township School District in Williamstown, South Jersey has closed all of its schools for the rest of this week to test for mold. Last week, the Board of Education announced at a school board meeting that Holly Glen Elementary would be closed for at least three weeks for cleaning after mold was discovered. It also announced a plan to send the school's 527 students to other facilities in the district. However, those plans were scrapped on Monday when all schools were closed as a precaution. Superintendant Charles Earling said, "We are doing everything we can to correct the situation. Making sure everything goes to the procedures and that we are opening the schools again when they are all clean."

One person was killed and two more injured in a multi-car accident in the Bustleton section of Northeast Philadelphia on Monday afternoon. It happened around 4:45 p.m. at Grant and Bustleton Aves. A 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. A 41-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy were taken to Aria-Jefferson Health Torresdale in stable condition. At least 4 vehicles were involved in the crash. Police are investigating the cause. Rush hour traffic was impacted as the intersection was closed for hours.
