Octavius Catto Statue Unveiled at City Hall; Police Crash in Northeast; House Sitter Murdered in NJ

A large crowd gathered on the curtain of City Hall in Philadelphia this morning for the unveiling of the city's first public statue honoring an African American. Octavius V. Catto was a 19th century activist, educator, scholar, civil rights leader, ball player, soldier, and army recruiter. Catto is known for successfully desegregating horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia. He was killed during violence on election day October 10th, 1871, just after the passage of the 15th Amendment granting voting rights to African American men. Catto was gunned down on South Street by an ethnic Irish political operative of the Democratic party who were trying to prevent blacks from voting for Republicans. He just was 32. Mayor Jim Kenney first heard the story of Octavius Catto about 15 years ago while still a councilman and began the push to honor the man. The statue is called "The Quest for Parity." The Octavius V. Catto Memorial Fund was established in 2004.

A Police officer and a civilian were injured in a crash in Northeast Philadelphia on Tuesday morning. It happened around 10:30 a.m. on the 10000 block of Decatur Road. A SUV rear ended a police van. The officer was taken to Aria Jefferson Health Torresdale Hospital to be treated. He is expected to be released. Another person complained of pain and was also taken to Torresdale to be treated. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

A woman house sitting in Gloucester County, New Jersey, was found dead in the home of an apparent homicide on Saturday night. 26-year-old Shawneeq M. Carter of Camden was watching the home on Hopkins Street in Woodbury over the weekend. An autopsy by the county coroner determined that she died from blunt force trauma and ruled the death a homicide. The resident of the home was not in the area at the time.
