Deadly Shooting In S. Phila; Third Day Of Methacton Strike; 69th St. Station Crash Update

Police are now investigating a deadly shooting that took place inside of a South Philadelphia home. The shooting took place at around 3:15 pm on Tuesday on the 700 block of Winton Street. Police say that a 20-year-old man was found on the scene shot in the chest. He was then taken to Temple University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The victim's name has not yet been released and police are continuing an investigation into the shooting.

The Methacton School District has now cancelled a third day of classes as the teacher strike continues. A school board meeting was held on Tuesday night and the district invited the Methacton Education Association to join in the discussion. The teachers went on strike this past Monday, they say they have been working without a contract since June 30th and have been negotiating since January. The terms being discussed include salary, benefits, class size, teacher-student ratio and team teaching. Nearly 5,000 students are being affected by the strike. A state mediator is now involved to coordinate between the two parties. The State Department of Education has stated there is a rule that prevents the strike going past 15 days.

The National Transportation Safety Board has now stated that the operator of a one-car commuter train that crashed into the 69th Street Terminal said he tried to stop the vehicle but was unable to. The NTSB released a statement on Tuesday saying that the operator reported slippery rail conditions that he said caused the crash. The Norristown High Speed Line Train crashed into an unoccupied train car. The crash then sent dozens of passengers as well as the operator to the hospital. SEPTA officials stated that they received no reports of slippery tracks that night.
