Afro Pick part of Mural Arts Monument Lab; Lafayette Student Had Head Injury; Dorenbos Doing Well

Mural Arts Philadelphia is presenting a temporary 9-week exhibition called Monument Lab that attempts to answer the question "What is an appropriate monument for the city of Philadelphia?" It will run from September 16th to November 19th and feature installations from 20 different artists from around the world at 12 public parks and squares around the city. 11 of the artists are from Philadelphia. The project intends to address issues of race, gender, sexuality, class and national belonging.

Although it will officially start on Saturday, one of the pieces included in the Monument Lab project has already been installed and has been getting attention. Hank Willis Thomas' All Power to All People has been placed across from City Hall on Thomas Paine Plaza outside of the Municipal Services Building. It is essentially a large afro pick with a black lacquer handle shaped like a fist in the air. It stands 8 ft tall and weighs 800 pounds. The statue of former mayor Frank Rizzo stands a few feet away. Controversy surrounding the Rizzo statue reached a boiling point a few weeks ago with supporters and detractors becoming vocal in the streets and online. The statue was vandalized several times, one time with the words "Black Power" written in spray paint. However, although the pair makes a curious juxtaposition, today's political conversation was not in the artist's mind. It was more so the other oversize objects (chess pieces, clothespin) that had influence in the design.

The Lehigh County Coroner's Office performed an autopsy on Wednesday morning on the Lafayette College student found unconscious outside of a dorm on Sunday afternoon. Coroner Scott Grim said that 19-year-old McCrae Williams died from blunt force head injuries. The manner of death has not been determined pending an investigation and toxicology results. The freshman lacrosse player from Massachusetts was discovered outside a dorm at the Easton, PA school around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. He died about 24 hours later at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Easton Police have been conducting interviews trying to piece together a timeline of Williams' weekend and what led up to the trauma that killed him.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told the media today that former long snapper Jon Dorenbos is doing well after surgery yesterday. Dorenbos was traded to the New Orleans Saints last month. The Saint's doctor discovered an aortic aneurysm during a physical. He had open heart surgery on Tuesday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Pederson opend the press conerfence by saying, "I would like to just send a shoutout to Jon Dorenbos. Everything went well yesterday with surgery and he's resting comfortably. Just wish him and his family well, our prayers are with him and hope for a speedy recovery."
