Officer in Fatal Shooting to be Dismissed; Accident at Ursinus College; DiNardo Waives Hearing

A Philadelphia Police officer has been suspended for 30-days with the intent to dismiss following a fatal officer-involved shooting in June. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross announced on Thursday that after a three-month investigation Officer Ryan Pownall would be dismissed. It happened on June 8th on the 4100 block of Whitaker Avenue in the city's Hunting Park neighborhood. 32-year-old David Thomas Jones of Germantown was stopped by Pownall for driving his dirt bike recklessly in the street. When Pownall was frisking Jones he felt a gun in his waistband. Jones pulled away and began to flee. Pownall thought Jones was reaching for the gun and shot twice, but Jones had dropped it in the street. Commissioner Ross said that their investigation used available surveillance footage and other evidence. They determined Pownall used poor judgement and that Jones no longer posed a threat when Pownall shot. Ross also criticized him for not taking available cover, for making a motor vehicle stop while he already had someone in his patrol car, and for not notifying dispatch. The Pennsylvania Attorney General will make any decision on criminal charges.

There was construction accident at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Montgomery County this morning. It happened around 11:45 a.m. near 5th Avenue and Main Campus Drive at the Innovation and Discovery Center building. A beam fell and injured two construction workers, according to Ursinus. One worker was lifted from the building on a stretcher and taken down the fire ladder. No word on the extent of the injuries or the cause of the accident.

Cosmo DiNardo waived his right to a preliminary hearing today. He is charged with killing four Bucks County men and burying them on his family's farm in July. He appeared via video feed in a Doylestown courtroom. His cousin, Sean Kratz, is expected to appear later today for his preliminary hearing. He is charged in three of the murders. DiNardo confessed to the crimes to take the death penalty off the table. Kratz's lawyer has promised a "vigorous" defense. All four men were shot, three of them were buried deep in a common grave and set on fire.
