Driver in MD Bus Crash Charged; Philadelphia Sues Over Sanctuary City; Man Robs Beer Store Video

The driver of a bus carrying over 2 dozen students and adults from Philadelphia that crashed on I-95 in Maryland this past spring is now facing charges. 59-year-old Clarence Beamer Jr. is charged with negligent driving contributing to an accident and failing to drive in a designated lane. The bus was carrying 30 eighth graders and staff members from the Charles W. Henry School in Mt. Airy to Washington D.C. for a field trip on May 15th. Investigators say that video cameras on the bus show the bus was traveling in the center lane when Beamer attempted to merge to the left 'fast' lane forcing a car onto the shoulder. The car came back onto the roadway and reached the front of the bus when the recording ends. The bus overturned on the highway near the Havre de Grace exit. Luckily, a bus full of Philadelphia police officers and recruits coincidentally was on the same stretch of highway at the same time also heading to DC. They were able to help tend to the injured students before medics arrived.

Philadelphia has become the latest 'sanctuary city' to sue Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Justice Department after Sessions announced last month new requirements on cities receiving JAG grants. Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grants are used by the police department to fund various things such as overtime, training, and equipment. The new conditions would require cities to give federal immigration officers notice when certain prisoners are being released and allow immigration officials access the city prisons to interview inmates to be eligible for the grant. The city must also certify that it has cooperated with immigration officials. Nine cities were singled out by the Justice Department as 'sanctuary cities' not complying with immigration policy. Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco have all filed suit to block the new conditions. Mayor Kenney defended the city's policy towards an individual's immigration status as a way to "foster trust between the immigration population and city officials and employees" and "bring members of Philadelphia's immigrant community from the shadows." Philadelphia received $1.6 million in JAG grants last year.

Philadelphia Police are asking the public's help in finding a suspect wanted in the robbery of a beer store in Northeast Philadelphia last week. Officers responded to GAT Beer (Grant Ave. Takeout) on the 1900 block of Grant Ave. just before 1 a.m. on August 23rd for the report of a burglar alarm. After reviewing the surveillance tape, they saw the suspect throw a brick through the front window and then climb inside. The man made off with a bottle of liquor, some lottery tickets, and change.
