Gen. James Beaver Bust Found Under I-95; Arrest Warrant for Hit-and-Run; Sharon Hill Fire

The bust of a Union General that went missing from a Fairmount Park Civil War monument on Thursday night was found on Friday morning under I-95. The bust was of Gen. James A. Beaver, a general in the Union army and the 20th Governor of Pennsylvania. It was apart of the Smith Memorial Arch located across from the Please Touch Museum. The bust was installed in 1912. It was found under I-95 near FDR park in South Philadelphia. "That is the real mystery. We think it is about 4 feet tall and 300 pounds. This is not the kind of thing you can throw in the back of your truck. So, we are a little stymied by how in the world someone got up 12 feet high," Kathryn Ott Lovell, commissioner of Philadelphia Parks and Recreations, said. Unlike other recent events surrounding monuments, authorities do not know of any controversy surrounding Beaver. Philadelphia Police are investigating.

Philadelphia Police have obtained an arrest warrant for a man wanted in a fatal hit-and-run in Center City earlier this month. 35-year-old Brendon Hay is wanted in the death of 53-year-old Ann Broderick. It happened on August 6th around 3:30 a.m. on Race St. between 13th and Broad St. Hay is charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, and accident involving death. Broderick, who is believed to have been homeless, had gotten up and crossed the street to use the restroom when she was hit by a white Jeep Wrangler. The driver did not stop. A security guard found her with trauma to her skull. She was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital a short time later. The Jeep was captured on surveillance cameras. Hay was captured on video in the area earlier in the night. Tipsters led police to a business in Collingdale where they found the vehicle. Hay is expected to turn himself in on Monday.

Firefighters battled a three-alarm apartment fire in Delaware County this afternoon. Crews were called in around 2:30 p.m. to Woodland and Sharon Aves. in Sharon Hill. Sharon Hill, Folcroft, Brookhaven, Holmes, and Upper Darby departments responded. Everyone was evacuated from the building. One person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The American Red Cross was on the scene to help those displaced and set up at Borough Hall. Fire crews had to fight the blaze from the outside as the roof collapsed making it dangerous to enter the building. No word on what caused the fire.
