Thousands at Philly is Charlottesville March; Synagogue Vandal Charged; Social Workers in Schools

Thousands of people took to North Broad Street in Center City Philadelphia tonight in an organized march against white supremacists. The 'Philly is Charlottesville' march began around 7 p.m. at the Congregation Rodeph Shalom Synagogue. Around 2,000 people gathered and moved down Broad Street to the Arch Street United Methodist Church for a rally. The man caught on surveillance cameras urinating on the front of a Northeast Philadelphia synagogue over the weekend has turned himself in to Philadelphia Police. 23-year-old Sheidali Dzhalilov of the 2100 block of Hoffnagle Street surrendered at the Northeast Detective Division at 7 p.m. Tuesday. (pictured below) Dzhalilov is charged with ethnic intimidation, indecent exposure, institutional vandalism, desecration objects, open lewdness, harassment, and disorderly conduct. It happened at 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Congregation Beth Solomon, located at 198 Tomlinson Road in the Somerton section. Dzhalilov can been seen making an obscene gesture to the camera before urinating on the wall and floor outside the front door of the synagogue. Police believe the synagogue was targeted specifically.

On Wednesday, Mayor Kenney announced a $1.2 million pilot program that will put social workers in 22 Philadelphia public schools beginning in September. The Philadelphia School Reform Commission is expected to sign off on the program on Thursday. Kenney has been working on implementing this program since his election two years ago. The School District of Philadelphia calls this Phase One and hopes to expand it to all schools in the future. Currently, the school district has one crisis response team for all 220 schools. The district will begin hiring social workers who will become district employees. They will be able to serve the student populations directly and help keep children out of crisis outside of school so they can focus on learning inside. (see list of schools below)
