| Charlottesville Victim and Suspect ID'd; Trump's Response Questioned/Clarified; Philly Area Vigils |

A woman who was killed this weekend in Charlottesville, VA, amidst the clash between counter-protestors and white nationalists on Saturday has been identified. 32-year-old Heather Heyer was crossing the street with a group of peaceful counter-protestors when a silver Dodge Challenger drove into the crowd, smashed into a car, and then backed up through the crowd (see video below). Heyer was killed and 19 others were injured. Police have arrested 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio. Fields is charged with second-degree murder and related charges. It started on Friday night when the right wing protesters marched carrying lit torches to the campus of University of Virginia in protest of a decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The violence grew on Saturday and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency. There were two more related deaths when a Virginia State Police helicopter crashed. The helicopter was assisting in monitoring the situation. 48-year-old Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen of Midlothian, Virginia, and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates of Quinton, Virginia both died at the scene. President Donald Trump was criticized by many for his response to the Charlottesville protests, mainly for not being specific in condemning racism and white supremacists. Instead, the president initially addressed hate, violence, and division on all sides. On Saturday afternoon from Bedminster, NJ, Trump said, "Hate and the division must stop, and must stop right now. We have to come together as Americans with love for our nation and ... true affection for each other." He condemned "in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides." He was called out by politicians on both sides for not explicitly denouncing the acts as 'domestic terrorism' and the actors as white supremacists. On Sunday, the White House issued this clarification: "The president said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred and of course that includes white Supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups," according to a White House spokesperson. "He called for national unity and bringing all Americans together." Ivanka Trump also tweeted similar sentiments.
UPDATE: Monday 12:45 p.m. Trump holds press conference, “Racism is evil,†Mr. Trump said. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the K.K.K., neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.â€
In response to this weekend's events in Charlottesville, VA, there have been multiple protests, vigils, and marches against hate and violence in the Philadelphia area. Several vigils have been held at City Hall on Saturday and Sunday. There was a vigil in Gorgas Park on Sunday night. Rallies were also held in Media, Jenkintown, Doylestown, Elkins Park, West Chester, Collingswood, Camden, Wilmington, Newark, and more. |
