Margate Wins Dune Injunction; AC Body Washes Up, 2 Sea Isle Drownings; Teen Dies Norristown Crash

An Atlantic County judge has sided with Margate, NJ, and approved an injunction to shut down sand dune construction in the shore town for a week. Following recent heavy rains, water has ponded around the new dunes. Margate officials say those pools are a safety hazard full of bacteria and have closed numerous beaches. The judge ordered all sides to work together to create a drainage solution. The dune construction is part of a statewide project to reinforce the 127 miles of coastline following Superstorm Sandy. It is being carried out by the Army Corps of Engineers. Margate had fought unsuccessfully against the project's implementation on it's shoreline. They argued the shore point's bulkhead would be sufficient in protecting the town and they did not need the dunes.

Atlantic City police are investigating after a body washed ashore Thursday evening. Police were called to the beach near the old Revel Casino on the 600 block of the Boardwalk around 8 p.m. Thursday. No word on the identity or circumstances of the death. Earlier this week in Sea Isle City, there were two fatal drownings. On Sunday, July 30th, there was an emergency in the water at the 86th Street beach. Lifeguards and Good Samaritans performed CPR. The man was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where he later died. He is identified as 58-year-old Brian Zwaan of Berwyn, PA. Zwaan was a prominent banker and supporter of Catholic education in the Philadelphia area. On Wednesday, August 2nd, a 74-year-old man was knocked over by a wave and held down for a long period. He was helped out of the water by other swimmers and lifeguards. CPR was performed and he was transported to Atlantic City Medical Center. He died on Thursday morning. He has not been identified.

A teenager was killed when a car full of fleeing suspects collided with a SUV driven by an off-duty Montgomery County sheriff's deputy in Norristown this morning. It happened on West Main Street near Forrest Avenue at 5:30 a.m. Police had responded to reports of suspicious activity on Buttonwood Street. A light colored Hyundai sedan with 5 suspects inside sped away from the scene before police could make contact. The car ran the red light and collided with a black Chevy Suburban driven by the off-duty deputy. Both cars ended up off the street and on the lawn of a business. A 17-year-old in the sedan died in the crash. Four others were taken into custody and transported to Paoli Hospital for treatment. The deputy was treated and released from the hospital. He was not involved in the pursuit, he was simply on his way into work. The teens were fleeing from an alleged robbery.
