Man Charged Murdering 2 yo Son; PA Turnpike 6% Rate Increase; Philly Recycling Do's and Don'ts

Philadelphia police have charged a man with the murder of his 2-year-old son. 24-year-old Quadim Bass is charged with Murder and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Police were called to the 1600 block of North 57th Street on Friday afternoon just after 1 p.m. for the report of someone screaming. Bass told officers that he was playing video games when he heard a thump and realized his son had fallen down the stairs. He said he had performed CPR until the police arrived. 2-year-old Bashir Mungin-Bass was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia by medics where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner said the cause of death was blunt trunk extremity trauma to the body.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission voted today to a 6-percent increase in the price of tolls. The rate increase will take effect on January 7th, 2018. E-ZPass customers will see fares go from $1.23 to $1.30, and cash customers will go from $1.95 to $2.10 (increase is rounded up to the nearest nickel). There will be no increase at the Delaware River Bridge westbound cash-less toll for E-ZPass or Toll-By-Plate customers. Also, Keyser Avenue (#122) and Clarks Summit (#131) on the Northeast Extension and the Findlay Connector near Pittsburgh will not see toll changes until April 2018.

Most of us try to recycle as much as we can. It's not hard to just throw things in one bin or another. Single-stream recycling has made it even easier (Many forget the days of sorting brown and green glass, plastic, metals, papers.) But, It still can get confusing as to what is and is not recyclable or what can't be accepted. (*see list below). The Philadelphia Streets Department sent out a few reminders of things NOT to recycle that may be counterintuitive. Pizza boxes are all cardboard, right? But if it has grease on it then it can't be recycled. You have to throw it away. Also, plastic bags can do damage to the machines. Keep them out of the recycling bin too.
