Philadelphia Police Headquarters Moving to Inquirer Building; Roosevelt Blvd Speed Camera Bill

The Philadelphia Police Department headquarters is going to be moving from the Roundhouse to the White Tower of Truth. The police administration has been located at 750 Race St. since 1963 and began looking for a new home during Mayor Nutter's administration. There were serious plans to move to the Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co. building at 4601 Market St. in West Philadelphia, but ultimately Mayor Kenney decided he wanted the force to stay in Center City. The former Inquirer and Daily News tower, located at 400 N. Broad Street, was built in 1924 for the newspaper. The newspaper properties moved to the Strawbridge & Clothier building at 801 Market St. in 2012. Building owner Bart Blatstein tried to win a casino license in 2014 at that location. In addition to the administration, the building will house both the 6th and 9th districts, fire and police communications, toxicology lab, medical examiner and morgue, and perhaps more. City Council will have to approve the plan.

A bill was approved by the Pennsylvania state House Transportation Committee that would allow the City of Philadelphia to place speed cameras along Roosevelt Blvd. Philadelphia Republican John Taylor is the sponsor of the bill. He said it is 'enabling legislation' meaning it would allow City Council to pursue use of the speed enforcement devices. The bill allows for a five-year pilot program on Roosevelt Boulevard. Council will decide how many would get installed. That roadway alone has accounted for 13% of traffic fatalities in the city over the past five years. The bill will now go before the full PA House.

Weather
Tonight, Cloudy, temperatures in the low 60's this evening in Center City
