3 Arrested, 1 Officer Injured Flash Mob; Teachers Not Docked May Day Pay; 9 Injured in Shooting Sat.

Three students were arrested and an officer was injured after a large fight among high school students broke out during a flash mob organized through social media in Juniata Park on Monday afternoon. It happened around 3:30 p.m. near the SEPTA Market-Frankford El station at Erie/Torresdale. A social media post called for a group to gather there after school. Three area high schools let out at that time. One fight broke out right at the station. An officer was knocked to the ground and suffered a rib injury. He was taken to Frankford Hospital. Two juveniles were arrested. Another fight broke out around the corner. Students stole an officer's baton, but he was able to retrieve it. One juvenile was arrested there. Authorities were able to prevent the mob from interupting SEPTA services.

The Philadelphia School District has decided not to penalize teachers who took personal days to participate in May Day protests. Around 1,000 teachers took off on May 1st this year to take part in rallies to protest their lack of contract for the past four years. The school district was considering docking those teacher's pay for that day because no more than 10% of a school's staff is allowed to take off without prior permission. Earlier this year, many teachers also took personal days to participate in other demonstrations like the Women's Day march on March 8th without incurring penalty.

Police are looking for two gunmen wanted for opening fire on a large crowd in Strawberry Mansion on Saturday night. 9 people were shot and injured. It happened around 10:30 p.m. on the 2500 block of North 23rd Street near Huntingdon Street. A group of about 30 people were outside on the street listening to music, dancing, and celebrating a friend's graduation when two unknown suspects began shooting from across the street. The victims were taken to either Temple or Hahnemann Hospitals. Two were placed in critical condition. So far there have not been any arrests and police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting.
