Trenton Standoff Ends Peacefully, 35 Hours; Judge Orders Charges in Amtrak 188; Williams in Court

A standoff with police in Trenton, NJ, ended peacefully late this afternoon after a tense 35 hours. 35-year-old Tyleeb Reese walked out of his home with his hands up and surrendered to police at around 5 p.m. Thursday. It started at 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday when U.S. Marshals attempted to serve a warrant to Reese at 300 block of Centre Street. He is a convicted sex offender and was wanted for a Megan's Law violation. As marshals entered the residence they were met with gunfire and retreated. A bystander on the street, 56-year-old Robert Powell, Jr. of Lamberton Street in Trenton, was struck and killed. Three Mercer County Sheriff's officers were injured. They were taken to the hospital, treated, and released. During the barricade situation negotiators used a bullhorn to communicate with Reese. Neighbors were evacuated from the surrounding homes and streets were blocked off.

On Thursday, a Philadelphia judge ordered prosecutors to charge the engineer at the helm of the fatal Amtrak 188 crash two years ago. Municipal Court Judge Marsha Neifield ordered the arrest of Brandon Bostian on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment. Two days ago, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office announced that it would not be filing criminal charges against Bostian for the May 12th, 2015 crash that killed 8 and injured over 200. It concluded from its investigation that Bostian's actions did not rise to level of criminal intent and that they did not have enough evidence prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt. The statute of limitations on possible charges runs out on Friday. Following the DA's decision, the family of one of the fatal victims, 39-year-old technology executive Rachel Jacobs, filed a private citizen criminal complaint on which Judge Neifield ruled. The case has been referred to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro's office to avoid conflict of interest. They are reviewing the judge's order and can appeal it to state Superior Court. Amtrak has already settled in civil court and agreed to pay $265 million in claims.

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams appeared in federal court today for an arraignment hearing on new charges brought this week. The new charges accuse Williams of using campaign funds for personal expenses and using city vehicles for personal trips. He was previously charged with taking gifts and bribes in exchange for official actions and other favors. The trial was set to start May 31st, but will be pushed back a few weeks. Also, today, one of the men accused of giving Williams those gifts, Mohammad N. Ali, pleaded guilty to his involvement. He is expected to cooperate with prosecutors and testify against Williams at trial.

UPDATE: Seth Williams' trial has been pushed back 2 1/2 weeks to June 19th.
