Bikes Riding on I-676 on Video; Cardinal O'Hara Convent Changes; L+I Violations at Pot Party

Yesterday afternoon, dozens of people riding bicycles took over the busy Vine Street Expressway in Center City. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. along I-676 eastbound. 100 or so kids, teens, and adults riding bikes streamed down the highway pulling stunts and popping wheelies while traffic waiting behind unable to safely pass. The riders exited at 8th Street and dispersed. No arrests have been made. The incident was caught on video by several eye witnesses. RECphilly's Dave Silver happened to be on the 22nd Street Bridge and was able to capture some of the action. See video of the bikers below.

UPDATE: The rideout was organized for the birthday of prominent Philadelphia BMX rider "One Way" Corey Murray. 16-year-old Murray has a large Instagram following with over 95,000 followers.

Four convents on the grounds of Cardinal O'Hara High School will be refurbished and turned into housing for international high school students. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is making a $6 million investment in order to grow capacity for international students. The news of the plans was contained in the school's prospectus, and has caught many off guard. The convents have been home to sisters working at the school for decades. Right now around 20 nuns from four different congregations live in the houses. Those include Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of Saint Joseph, and Sisters of Saint Francis. At some point "over the course of 3-4 years in a stepped process" those women religious will be reassigned to new facilities in the Archdiocese. Archdiocese Spokesman Ken Gavin says, "While all of them (houses) are used to some degree by different orders of women religious, all are underutilized in terms of capacity that could be occupied... very few of the female religious now living in those buildings are serving at Cardinal O'Hara." He also says, "I need to be clear that the buildings are not being sold and that no one is moving out of an existing convent residence in the immediate future." "The building will be re-purposed as housing for international high school students attending Archdiocesan high schools."

Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections has released its report and findings following Saturday night's Police raid of a 'pot party' in Kensington. The underground marijuana party organized on social media was held in a warehouse on the 4500 block of Worth Street. Police made 22 arrests and confiscated large amounts of cash and drugs. L&I was called in because police believed there were fire and occupancy issues with the location. At the time of the bust there were around 200 people inside, many of whom were lighting and smoking pot, and there was only one entrance/exit. L&I has issued a Cease Operations Order for the warehouse. They found over a dozen violations, many of them fire hazards and Fire Code violations like lack of fire extinguishers, inoperable sprinklers, doors locked/blocked, combustable material near potential ignition sources, etc. Following the Ghost Ship fire that killed 36 in Oakland last year, L&I is inspecting all warehouses in the city hoping to prevent a similar incident here in Philadelphia. Philadelphia Mayor Kenney was asked about the marijuana raid and arrests on Monday he said, "The real solution is to legalize it in the state of Pennsylvania as they did in Colorado and we won't have to use police resources in these kinds of activities."
