Barricade Situation Over; Art Museum Renovations; Sessions Sanctuary Cities Statements

Philadelphia Police formed a barricade at an apartment building in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia on Monday night. Police arrived on the scene after getting reports of gunshots coming from the top floor. Responding officers began to set up a perimeter along the 500 block of Front Street at around 6:30 pm. Police say that an employee at Delilah's Gentleman club near the apartments got in her car and heard the gunshots, then noticed that two of them struck her car. SWAT teams arrived on the scene and went through floor by floor searching for the gunman, after hours of searching neither a suspect or a weapon were found. Police are now reviewing local surveillance footage. I-95 was shut down in the area for a period of time during the incident.

The Philadelphia Art Museum will be officially breaking ground on Thursday for its $196-million project to improve the museum as well as expand it. The project consists of putting in a vaulted walkway that would run from the Kelly Drive side of the Museum, which will serve as the primary entrance. The Lenfest Hall at the west entrance of the museum will also be renovated. The auditorium will also be removed and will be replaced with a two-story public space known as "The Forum." The museum will also repurpose both sides of the central station which will add more than 23,000 square feet of new gallery space. Most of the museum will remain open while there is construction going on. It is expected that the project will be complete in 2020.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated during a White House briefing on Monday that he is "urging states and local jurisdictions to comply with these federal laws" when it comes to "sanctuary cities" throughout the country. Sessions stated that the Justice Department will require all states and cities to comply with all immigration laws in order to receive grants through the Office of Justice Programs. Mayor Jim Kenney stated that he is taking a defiant stand on this issue and that he and other mayors are prepared to go to court over this issue. There is now word on how much federal funding could be at stake if Philadelphia does not comply with these laws.
