Philly Cop Arrested for Animal Cruelty; 6 Female Teens Arrested in Attack; Toddler Death Suspicious

A Philadelphia police officer has been arrested in connection to an emaciated dog found dumped in a trash bag in Wissahickon Valley Park last November. The Pennsylvania SPCA says that 33-year-old Michael Long is charged with two counts of animal cruelty, one count for possession of an instrument of a crime and one summary charge of animal cruelty. The dog, named Cranberry because it was near Thanksgiving, was found on November 23, 2016 by a Good Samaritan on a hike with their dog. They called the PSPCAâ€™s Humane Law Enforcement team who came and rescued the pit bull. Long, an 11-year-veteran assigned to the 18th district, has been suspended 30 days with the intent to dismiss by Commissioner Richard Ross. Cranberry has made a full recovery and was adopted in December.

Philadelphia authorities say that six female teens have been arrested for setting one teen's hair on fire and poking at another with a knife. The incident happened on Wednesday around 6:50 p.m. near the SEPTA Market-Frankford El stop at 46th and Market Sts. The victims were 16 and 13-year-old cousins. The suspects used a can of hairspray and a lighter to create a torch and caught the 16-year-old's hair on fire. She was taken to Children's Hospital and released. Another suspect had a knife and poked at the 13-year-old from behind. Her jacket stopped the attack and was torn but the girl was not injured. SEPTA Police tracked down all the suspects. In a press conference Thursday afternoon speaking of other teen arrests for violent incidents near train stations, SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel says SEPTA officers will start riding every train after school is dismissed to prevent these brawls.

Philadelphia Police are investigating the "suspicious death" of a young boy in West Oak Lane on Wednesday night. Officers responded to the home on the 7100 block of North 15th Street shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday. They were responding to a "hospital case" call. They found a 3-5 year-old boy unresponsive lying in a bed. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The cause of death is pending an autopsy. A tipster had called to report the toddler to police. The investigation is ongoing.
