Atlantic City Police and Fire Fight Cuts; J.C. Penney Closing Stores; Hit-and-run Suspect Arrested

Police officers and firefighters in Atlantic City are fighting back against proposed cuts by the State of New Jersey. They were out on the boardwalk on Friday handing out flyers to raise awareness. They say that layoffs or reduced salaries will only hurt the public's safety in the city. The cuts are being proposed by state officials who are in charge of Atlantic City's finances after a state takeover. The cuts would take the police force from 274 to 250 and the fire department from 225 to 125. The two unions are also fighting back in court. The police union filed a lawsuit on Wednesday. A judge ruled on a similar suit by the firefighter's union on Friday. That ruling stops any layoffs, but would allow for pay cuts.

Retailer J.C. Penney has released the list of 138 stores it plans to close nationwide. That includes four in our area. It previously announced that it would close between 130 to 140 stores and impact 5,000 positions back in February. J.C. Penney stores at the King of Prussia Mall, Willow Grove Mall, and Philadelphia Mills Mall in Pennsylvania and at Rio Grande Plaza near Wildwood, NJ are among those closing. Most of the stores will close in June with the liquidation process beginning April 17th. A Montgomery County man has been arrested and charged in a deadly hit-and-run when after trying to sell the pickup truck from the accident the potential buyer called police. 28-year-old Adam Timbario of Gilbertsville is charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death or injury and tampering or fabricating physical evidence. The accident happened on the evening of March 3rd on Route 100 near Shoemaker Road in Pottstown. 24-year-old Donald Purnell was walking to his 8 p.m. shift at Wendy's when he was struck by a Ford truck, which then left the scene. Purnell was struck by a second vehicle as he lay in the street. That driver did remain at the site of the crash. Timbario had been trying to sell his truck prior to the accident, but immediately after the crash he contacted his prospective buyer and offered to reduce the price, citing some damage. The next day, the buyer had a mechanic review the 1994 Ford XLT truck. The mechanic told the buyer what he thought about the damage and the recent hit-and-run. The buyer decided to call police. Timbario told police that a tire came over the median and hit his truck. He has been released on $75,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 31.
