Search For Overbrook Home Invaders; 1998 Murder Case Overturned; Penn's Landing Park Near Goal

Philadelphia Police are now searching for three suspects that are wanted in connection to a home invasion that took place in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. The invasion took place on the 6500 block of Lebanon Avenue at around 3:19 pm on Thursday. Police say that the 32-year-old victim opened her front door after hearing a knock, at this time the three suspects forced their way into the victim's house. Once inside the house, two of the suspects stole the victim's purse, keys, two cellphone's and clothing. The suspects then fled in different directions, luckily no injuries were reported. Anyone with information regarding the suspects is asked to contact police.

Paul McKernan, who has spent nearly 20 years in prison for allegedly killing his roommate with a baseball bat in 1998, could now be a free man after his attorney's made a successful appeal. Former Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Lisa Richette, who was facing national criticism from former head of the NRA Charlton Heston, said that she was "soft" on criminals. McKernan's attorney's brought up an unorthodox meeting between Richette and the victim's family where she asked them if they were happy how she was handling the case. McKernan's attorney's stated that he did not get a fair trial because she was too concerned with keeping her reputation solid. Philadelphia's District Attorney has not yet stated whether or not he will appeal the case.

The $225 million Penn's Landing Park project is now just $10 million shy of reaching it's goal. The William Penn Foundation announced on Thursday that they are pledging up to $15 million to go towards the Penn's Landing Park. Mayor Jim Kenney stated earlier in the week that the city will have a $90 million commitment, PennDot also stated they will put up $10 million for a study, as well as another $100 million towards the construction. The planned project is to place a four-acre cap over I-95 that would connect Center City and the waterfront. The space would feature 11 acres of public space, a new park, as well as area for 1,500 new homes, 500 hotel rooms, and 75,000 feet of retail space. A study by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation stated that the park could bring in nearly $1.6 million in returns to the City, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia School District. Officials stated that it will take around 5 years to complete, but initial work is expected to begin by the end of this year.
