Kenny Delivers Budget Address; hhgregg closing 88 stores; Addicted MontCo Officer Stole Evidence

Mayor Jim Kenney presented his second budget to Philadelphia City Council on Thursday. The $4.4 billion budget for the fiscal year starting July 1st contains some new spending but no new taxes. Some items included in the budget are new hires and equipment in the fire department, substance abuse support and treatment, a park built over I-95 and Delaware Ave. in Old City, additional lawyers for child welfare system, and additional health inspectors for restaurants. City Council members reacted positively to the budget and see it passing without much difficulty. Outside of City Hall, a few dozen protestors wore t-shirts and chanted 'Ax the Tax' in opposition to the city's newly enacted beverage tax

Consumer electronics and home appliance store hhgregg, Inc. announced today that it is planning on closing 3 distribution centers and 88 stores. Eight of those stores are in the Philadelphia area. They include Downingtown, Berwyn, Montgomeryville, Whitman Square, Philadelphia, and Langhorne in Pennsylvania. Moorestown and Deptford in New Jersey and Wilmington, Delaware. "We are strategically exiting markets and stores that are not financially profitable for us," said Robert J. Riesbeck, hhgreggâ€™s president and CEO. "This is a proactive decision to streamline our store footprint in the markets where we have been, and will continue to be, important to our customers, vendor partners and communities." The current inventory will be sold off over the next few weeks with final closings by mid-April.

Montgomery County District Attorney announced today that an investigation into missing evidence at the Upper Dublin Township Police Department is related to an off-duty officer's suicide. 18-year-veteran Michael W. Gommer killed himself in his home in December. Two weeks prior, the department discovered several irregularities in the evidence room including missing evidence, both drugs and cash. Gommer oversaw that room. The DA's investigation traced all of the missing evidence back to Gommer. DA Kevin Steele said that the officer was hiding a serious drug addiction problem from his colleagues. He was using the evidence room as his personal medicine closet. The evidence is from almost 90 cases dating back to 2010, 11 of which are still open. The DA is contacting defense attorneys and is determining if the cases have been compromised as a result. Upper Dublin now requires two officers to process evidence.
