Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy who attacked and robbed a 72-year-old woman in her home, leaving her bound in a closet for four days. It started on Wednesday February 22nd, when the victim returned from running errands in the morning to find her house had been burglarized. She left again for work. When she returned at 7:30 pm, the woman was attacked from behind and strangled until she lost consciousness. She was bound with zip ties and duct tape and placed in a small closet under the stairs. Her family found her after four days after growing concerned. The suspect stole her car, phone, credit cards, and other items. The juvenile resided at Devereaux Brandywine, a behavioral health facility, and had escaped the day of the attack. He returned to the facility two days later and was then transferred. Devereaux reported the missing boy to authorities. Police traced credit card activity and matched surveillance footage to the teen. He has been charged with attempted homicide, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, strangulation, and related charges.
Hundreds gathered in Philadelphia around noon on Thursday for the 'Stand Against Hate' rally at Independence Mall. The interfaith rally was in response to vandalism of the Mount Carmel Jewish Cemetery in Philadelphia's Wissinoming section where hundreds of tombstones were knocked over earlier this week. Gov. Tom Wolf, Mayor Jim Kenney, Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Archbishop Charles Chaput, Naomi Adler of Jewish Federation, and other faith leaders spoke. "I am proud to stand in solidarity with Jewish, Muslim, Christian and all faith leaders whom have united against the recent rash of hate in our communities and country," Wolf said in a statement. "The silver-lining in all of this that we have seen the best of Pennsylvania in response to these disgraceful acts – people of different background coming together to support each other and stand united against discrimination, hate and intimidation." A reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of those responsible has grown to $69,000.
High winds have caused damage and power outages across the region today. In Delaware County, a man was injured when a tree crashed onto his home and through his bedroom window around 4 a.m. in Clifton Heights. In Ocean County, a large tree came crashing down on two school buses on White Road in Lakewood, NJ. No injuries were reported. In Montgomery County, downed power lines caused a fire next to SEPTA's West Trenton Line in Lower Moreland. Service was suspended briefly. Gusts this morning reached 50-60mph. Winds will be dying down as the evening progresses.
Weather
This afternoon, Sunny and Windy, temperatures in the upper 40's in Center City |
