Sixers Trade Nerlens Noel to Dallas; $5.7 Million in Soda Tax in January; Main Line Teacher Arrested

Before the NBA trade deadline today the 76ers have made a move, but not the one many were expecting. The Sixers traded center Nerlens Noel to the Dallas Mavericks for center Andrew Bogut, guard Justin Anderson and a protected top-18 first round pick. Bogut, the 1st overall pick in the 2005 draft, is in the final year of his contract and the Sixers may try to trade him before buying him out. Anderson is in his second year in the league out of Virginia. The top 18 protected pick converts to two second round picks if it doesn't convey this year. Everyone was expecting a possible trade involving Jahlil Okafor. This trade has many fans upset and questioning GM Bryan Colangelo. Fans are reacting on Twitter saying that he "got fleeced."

The City of Philadelphia has released the first figures related to the new Beverage tax (misnomered soda tax, sweetened beverage tax, sugary drinks tax). The city's revenue department had projected that the first month of the tax would generate $2.3 million dollars of revenue. However, the actual collections were more than double those projections. The city collected $5.7 million for the month of January 2017. The 1.5 cents per ounce tax is levied directly on the distributors. 380 distributors have registered with the city. Most have chosen to pass the cost of the tax onto the stores and then onto the consumer which is evident on the price tags on store shelves. Retailers have reported large drops in beverage sales and warn of potential layoffs as a result. The city hopes to bring in $91 million a year from the tax. It needs to collect $7.7 million monthly to reach that goal.

Another worker at a Main Line school for children with behavioral issues has been arrested for inappropriate conduct. 35-year-old Maya Johnson of Philadelphia has been charged with corruption of minors and disorderly conduct. She worked as a counselor and school aide at Presbyterian Children's Village in Rosemont, PA. The school is a court ordered facility for children with emotional and behavioral problems. She is accused of showing inappropriate pictures of herself on her cell phone to three juveniles and an 18-year-old. She also is accused of flashing her buttocks to students at different times. Johnson also allegedly showed a video of herself performing a sex act to students. The students reported her to the school who immediately told Radnor police. Johnson has previously held positions at five other schools. They were all notified by police. Earlier this month, another teacher, 28-year-old Nina Scott of Downingtown, was arrested and charged with Institutional Sexual Assault and other charges involving a 16-year-old student at The Villiage.
