A woman was arrested in Delaware County this afternoon after police say she stabbed an 8-year-old girl in the head. It happened in an apartment on the 500 block of MacDade Boulevard in Collingdale around 2:45 Friday. Officers arrived on scene to a male carrying the bleeding 2nd grader out the front door. She was taken to Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital and later transferred to Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania with a 4-inch gash to her forehead. The little girl is expected to be ok. 32-year-old Majeah Bashir has been arrested and charged with criminal attempt homicide, simple assault, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment of another person. She lives in the second floor apartment. The child lives on the first floor. There was some sort of argument over babysitting in the apartment hallway when Bashir stabbed the child with a butcher knife.

The City of Trenton, NJ, has raised the age for the legal purchase of tobacco products from 19 to 21. City Council voted on the change on Thursday night but the law won't go into effect until next month. New Jersey's statewide age limit is 19. However, 21 other towns have acted like Trenton and raised the limit to 21. Retailers caught selling tobacco products to anyone under 21 face fines up to $1,000.

Penn State has now shut down a fraternity after a pledge died earlier this month after falling down the stairs. Beta Theta Pi will lose its status as a recognized fraternity for at least 5 years. On Thursday February 2nd, 19-year-old Timothy Piazza of Lebanon, NJ, fell down a flight of stairs around 11 pm. Help wasn't call until 10:30 a.m. the next morning when he was found unresponsive in the house. He died in the hospital the next day. The medical examiner ruled the death accidental. Excessive drinking may have played a part in Piazza's death. Penn State put an alcohol ban into place for all fraternity and sorority social functions after the incident. That ban will continue for the rest of the spring semester. There will be no more recruiting as well. When alcohol service is allowed back, no hard liquor may be served. Also, a state-certified bartender must be hired to serve beer and wine. The Beta Theta Pi fraternity is a private organization and the chapter house is private property. The university is working with the fraternity’s alumni board on housing for students living at the house.
