Man Critical After Shooting In Oak Lane; 'Day Without Immigrant' Day; Controversy In AC Police Dept

A man is now in critical condition after he was shot in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia Wednesday night. The shooting took place near Lambert Street and Chelten Avenue at around 8:30 pm. Police were in pursuit of an armed man, and then called in for backup after shots were fired. After backup came, three officers discharged their weapons. It is still unclear if the man was shot directly by police. The man was shot in his mid section and was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center in critical condition.

Organizers across the country are now telling immigrants to miss class, work and to not shop on Thursday as part of "A Day Without Immigrants." The day is in response to President Trump's administration, especially his failed travel ban, as well as his pledge to increase deportation of immigrants living in the country illegally. Organizers in Philadelphia have stated they expect hundreds of immigrant workers and families to participate in the day. One of the organizers in Philadelphia, Erika Almiron, stated that immigrant communities have not seen a rise in immigration raids, but residents are concerned about the possibility. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney is one of many leaders around the country who have vowed to keep their "sanctuary city" status, as well as declining to help federal law enforcement with deportation efforts.

UPDATE 2/16 7:45: Dozens of businesses, especially restaurants, were closed on Thursday in Philadelphia in response to the "A Day Without Immigrants" protests across the country. Signs could be seen hanging in doorways explaining why they were not open for regular business today. Many others were not closed but did not penalize workers who took part in the walk out. A rally was held this afternoon at Thomas Paine Plaza in Center City.

The Atlantic City Police Department is now under a lot of controversy after two of their officers and four employees have been accused of wrongdoing on the job. Atlantic City Police Officer Dayton Brown is now facing domestic assault charges after he allegedly beat up his girlfriend. He was placed into police custody on Tuesday and has been suspended without pay. Also, the Internal Affairs office is investigating a video that has been circulating of an officer using language and a tone to a civilian that the department has described "concerning and not condoned." Also two 911 operators were reportedly found selling and buying drugs while at work. Two other employees at the call center have been suspended but not criminally charged.
