Penn State Stops Alcohol at Fraternity Parties; Winter Storm Came Up Short, Cold Winds Settle In

Penn State University has indefinitely stopped fraternity and sorority parties where alcohol is served following a recent student death and what school officials call growing allegations of hazing, sexual assault and other misconduct. Vice president for student affairs Damon Sims and the Penn State Interfraternity Council acted jointly to halt alcohol related activities. On Thursday, February 2nd around 11 p.m., 19-year-old sophomore Timothy Piazza of Lebanon, NJ, fell down a flight of stairs at the Beta Theta Pi house. He was found unresponsive and unconscious the next morning and medical attention was called at 10:49 a.m. Piazza was flown to Hershey Medical Center where he later died. His death has been ruled accidental but police are still investigating what happened and why it took 12 hours to call authorities. That fraternity chapter has been suspended. The overall alcohol moratorium will remain in effect until fraternity leaders agree to change their policies and practices.

The late changeover from rain to snow and early exit of today's winter storm kept snow totals well below those predicted last night. The suburbs north and west got the most between 3-5 inches, but the city of Philadelphia itself only received around 1-2 inches. The snow emergency has been lifted in the city, cars are now allowed to park along snow emergency routes in the city. If your car was towed during the storm you should call 215-686-SNOW. Many are enjoying the snow day regardless. Philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools are open again on Friday. Temperatures are dropping behind the storm and winds are picking up. If you see someone living on the street call Homeless outrach at 215-232-1984.
