Police Investigate N. Philly Robberies; Gov. Wolf Budget Address; Betsy DeVos: Sec. Of Education

Philadelphia Police are now investigating a string of robberies targeting women that have been taking place in the Northwest neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Police say that they believe the robberies are all connected due to how the victims are robbed, and the description of the suspect and getaway car given by the victims. The robberies have taken place between February 2nd and February 5th, and during each robbery the women were either walking back to their car or getting in their car. When the suspect approached, he would push them to the ground and take their purse and then flee in a maroon colored vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police.

Governor Wolf stated during his budget address, he proposed closing a multi-billion budget gap with cuts and savings that would not cause an increase of broad-based taxes. Governor Wolf said he does not want to increase the state sales tax or income tax in his budget proposal, instead bring large cuts and consolidations to government bureaucracy. Some of Wolf's initiatives include consolidating four state departments, and others include eliminating the University of Pennsylvania's subsidy for veterinary programs. The Governor also wants to charge local municipalities who solely rely on state police for law enforcement, increase education spending and reducing payments for student transportation, and increase taxing on natural gas extraction.

Billionaire education activist Betsy DeVos was confirmed on Tuesday as the secretary of education in President Trump's Administration. The vote was tied at 50-50, and was decided by Vice President Mike Pence's tie-breaking vote. There has been a lot of controversy over DeVos' qualification as secretary of education, especially after her performance in the Senate confirmation hearinsg, where many say she seemed to be "an unqualified and unfit nominee." DeVos has stated that she is a strong advocate for public schools, but officials say that she has spent millions of dollars undermining public education by promoting charter and private schools.
