Manhole Explosion In Montco; Robbery in S. Philly Video; Kenney Addresses Trump Murder Rate Comment

Police are now investigating after an explosion of a manhole injured a Montgomery County woman on Thursday morning. It happened near Ardmore and Lancaster Avenues in Montgomery County just after 6 am. Police say that the explosion happened underground, causing the manhole lid to blow off, which then hit the 50-year-old woman in the ankle. The explosion also knocked out the power for several hours for homes and businesses in the area. Crews were able to get the power back on, but the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

Police are investigating after surveillance footage of an armed robbery has been released that took place at a business in South Philadelphia. The robbery happened at Gold Star Altercations on the 6300 block of Elmwood Avenue last Thursday. Police say that the woman working was getting ready to close when an armed suspect entered the store. The video shows the suspect hitting the woman repeatedly and then running off with cash from the register. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact Philadelphia Police. You can see the video below.

Mayor Jim Kenney was very distraught about a statement made by President Trump this afternoon about Philadelphia's murder rate. Trump stated in his speech at the GOP retreat, "Here in Philadelphia the murder rate has been steady, I mean just terribly increasing." Mayor Jim Kenney responded, "Trump's false statements today were an insult to the men and women of the Philadelphia police force - the very same men and women who are working long hours today to ensure his safety." The murder rate in Philadelphia dropped from 280 in 2015 to 277 in 2016, although it is not a huge decrease, the numbers have substantially decreased since the 1990's when the numbers were above 400.

Mayor Kenney's Full Statement

"President Trump's false statements today were an insult to the men and women of the Philadelphia police force, the very same men and women who are working long hours today to ensure his safety. Our police officers have worked tirelessly and with great personal sacrifice to get Philadelphia's crime rate down to its lowest point in forty years, while also successfully implementing reforms to strengthen police-community relations and uphold the rights of all our residents. Our homicides are, in fact, slowly declining, and while we are not satisfied with even our current numbers, we are handicapped by Republican refusal to enact any kind of common sense gun control and by their obsession with turning our police officers into ICE agents, which will prevent immigrants from coming forward to report crimes or provide critical witnesses statements that can put dangerous criminals behind bars."
