Man Dies From 50-lb Dumbbell Crash; 96yo Woman Attacked by Dogs; Predatory Towing Crackdown Law

A New Jersey man has died from injuries sustained when a 50 lb dumbbell came crashing through his windshield while traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike two weeks ago. 75-year-old Jack DeCarlo of Hamilton Township, Mercer County, died on Tuesday. On January 9th, DeCarlo and his wife were headed to Myrtle Beach, SC. It happened around 7:18 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 6, north of Interchange 1 in Oldmans Township. His wife, Pat, was not injured. Police are still trying to determine where the dumbbell came from.

A 96-year-old woman is in critical condition after being mauled by two dogs in the Germantown neigborhood on Wednesday afternoon. It happened around 3:40 p.m. on the 5800 block of Brush Road. Police responded to the call of a person screaming. They found the woman unresponsive with dog bites to her head, face, and arms. She was rushed to Einstein Medical Center. Police captured two pit bulls believed to be responsible for the attack.

Mayor Kenney signed a law on Tuesday that hopes to crack down on predatory towing practices in Philadelphia. The law will go into effect on February 1st. Private towing companies will not be allowed to tow a vehicle from a private driveway or lot unless the car has been ticketed by a city agency first. The Philadelphia Parking Authority will also coordinate with University Police, SEPTA, and Philadelphia Police on ticketing and towing. In recent months, private tow companies have been exposed on video running towing scams by moving and manipulating private parking tow zone signs. Under the new law, those vehicles could not have been hooked and towed without a valid ticket from a city agent. The new law was worked on with input from law enforcement, property owners, and tow operators.
