Sheriff Lt. Leaves Hospital After Accident; Turnpike Bridge Closed; MontCo Teen Wanted for Shooting

A Philadelphia sheriff's lieutenant who was severely injured in an elevator accident in Center City over the summer is leaving the hospital and going home. Philadelphia Sheriff Lt. Paul Owens was riding in a court staff elevator at the Criminal Justice Center on the morning of August 4th. The elevator malfunctioned and the car crashed through the roof of the elevator shaft. Owens suffered head and chest injuries and several broken vertebrae. He is paralyzed from the waist down. He has spent the past months at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital getting treatment and is now well enough to go home. The investigation into the cause of the elevator malfunction is still ongoing. That elevator remains out of service.

PA Turnpike officials told Pennsylvania Senators today that in a best case scenario the Delaware River Bridge would be closed for only two weeks. Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Chief Operating Officer Craig Shuey told the Senate Transportation Committee that he could not accurately predict how long the bridge that connects Pennsylvania with the New Jersey Turnpike will remain closed. A large crack in a steel beam was discovered on Friday afternoon. Support piers are being lifted into place to stabilize the area. That will take a week to 10 days. At that point they will be able to study how the bridge is performing. Shuey says the worst case would involve a rebuild of that entire section of bridge.

A Montgomery County teen is wanted in a shooting that left another man wounded. At 7:10 pm on January 19th, Hatfield police responded to Abington-Lansdale Hospital for the report of a gunshot victim. The 19-year-old victim was brought in by private vehicle. He says he was shot in a parking lot on the 2000 block of Maple Avenue in Hatfield Township. He identified 16-year-old Jâ€™Mel Anthony Duran-Taylor, of the 800 block of Wedgewood Drive in Lansdale as the shooter. A warrant has been issued for Duran-Taylor. He has been charged as an adult with attempted murder, aggravated assault, attempted robbery and possessing instruments of a crime. He is believed to be in the Harrisburg area.
