Soda Tax Backlash, Bus Driver Abandons Student, Villanova Robot Bomb Squad

Philadelphia shoppers have been finding steep surcharges on grocery bills since the sweetened beverage tax kicked in, but Mayor Jim Kenney describes some of it as "gouging" by retailers who want to make customers angry about the tax. Kenney said he believes most customers understand the reason for the tax and he believes it doesn't need to impact them as much as it has. Among retailers, only Shop Rite has responded, saying they are passing the tax along because it greatly increases sweetened beverage prices and it wants customers to know.

A driver is accused of leaving a child on a school bus so he could go grocery shopping in West Philadelphia. Philadelphia Police say 28-year-old Jamar Henry left a 7-year-old student from Cornerstone Christian Academy alone on a school bus while he went inside a Shop Rite at 6700 Haverford Avenue on Monday around 4:45 p.m. Police say the young child told them that Henry told him to stay on the bus and that he was left alone for 10 minutes until officers arrived. While they were talking to the student, Henry ran back to the bus to tell them he needed to use the bathroom and that's why he stopped. An officer viewed surveillance video and it did not match Henry's story. Henry also had marijuana in his possession.

A team at Villanova University is testing a robotic 'bomb squad' it has built for the developing world. The robot rolls on four wheels to check out something suspicious. Cameras on the robot allows its human operator to be a safe distance away - around 100 yards. Using the palm-sized Raspberry Pi computer and a Arduino microcontroller, the group has managed to make an explosive ordnance disposal robot for about $10,000 - a fraction of the cost of a military-grade unit.
