Driver Leaves Boy on Bus to Go Shopping; Christie to Focus on Addiction; ROTC Instructor Charged

A Philadelphia school bus driver is facing charges for leaving a child on a running bus as he went in to a grocery store in West Philadelphia. 28-year-old Jamar Henry picked up the 7-year-old student from Cornerstone Christian Academy at 58th and Chester Streets on Monday afternoon. Henry stopped at Shop Rite at 67th and Haverford Ave. He told the boy to stay on the bus as he went inside. Passersby saw the child alone on the bus and called police. Henry came out of the store as officers were questioning the child saying he had a bathroom emergency but store surveillance showed him shopping. He was charged with child endangerment and possession of marijuana. The boy was unharmed and returned home to his parents.

Governor Chris Christie delivered his final State of the State address this afternoon in front of New Jersey lawmakers. He devoted much of his address to how he plans to tackle the state's growing opioid addiction epidemic. In 2015, nearly 1,600 people died from overdoses in the state. That's a 20% increase from 2014. Most of those deaths were from opiods like heroin, oxycontin, and fentanyl. Christie proposed limits on opioid pain medication that doctors could prescribe. He is asking lawmakers to require insurers to cover at least six months of drug treatment. He would also change rules to consider 18 and 19-year-olds as minors so it was easier for them to find a bed in treatment centers. Christie announced that launch of a website and phone number for those looking for information or seeking help for their addiction. They are ReachNJ.gov or 1-844-Reach-NJ.

A former North Penn High School ROTC instructor has been arrested and charged with institutional sexual assault. According to the Montgomery County District Attorney, the principal called police on December 15th to report a suspected sexual incident involving a teacher. The victim, who was a member of the ROTC, told authorities that she had sexual intercourse with the instructor, Mark Miller, several times including at a hotel. Surveillance at the hotel confirmed that the two were together in the lobby. The incidents happened between November and December of last year. Miller was charged with institutional sexual assault and criminal use of a communications facility. He was arraigned and released on $50,000 unsecured bail.

â€˜Mark Miller, a former military science instructor in the North Penn High School JROTC program who resigned his position, has been charged with sexual misconduct with a student. High school officials contacted Towamencin Township Police on December 14, 2016 when students reported allegations against the accused. The employee was hired in 2013 as a military science instructor for the Air Force JROTC Program at North Penn High School. He submitted his letter of resignation on December 14, 2016.

Charges such as these against Miller are contrary to the core values that educators hold true and will never be tolerated in the North Penn School District. As always, North Penn High School has the staff and resources in place for students who may need extra support during this time. Student safety is a top priority of the North Penn School District. Students are commended for reporting and acting upon this serious issue.â€™
