50lb Dumbbell Crashes Through SUV Windshield; Sinkhole in Kensington; Man Killed Jumping onto SEPTA

A man was seriously injured after a 50 lb dumbbell crashed through the windshield of his SUV as he was driving on the New Jersey Turnpike in Salem County on Monday morning. It happened around 7:18 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 6, north of Interchange 1 in Oldmans Township. The motorist lost control of the SUV after the 50-pound weight smashed through the driver side windshield and the vehicle ended up in a grassy area on the side of the road. The 75-year-old driver was flown to Crozer Chester Medical Center in critical condition. A passenger in the vehicle was unharmed. State police are investigating where the dumbbell came from. They are checking on the possibility it was thrown from one of several overpasses in the area.

UPDATE: The driver has been identified as 75-year-old Jack DeCarlo of Hamilton Township, New Jersey. His wife, Patricia DeCarlo, was also in the vehicle but was unharmed. DeCarlo has undergone surgery at Crozer Chester Medical center. The couple was headed to Myrtle Beach, SC. Authorities are still trying to determine where the dumbbell came from, whether it was from an overpass nearby or from another vehicle on the highway.

Repairs continued today on the 2300 of East Boston Street in Kensington after a giant sinkhole opened up on Sunday and swallowed two cars. Philadelphia Water Department responded to a 6-inch water main break around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Customers were complaining of low water pressure and water in their basements. The break caused a 40 feet by 50 feet wide crater to appear in the street. One resident's car was completely engulfed by the hole. Another's SUV was dangling halfway down. PGW has shut off gas to the entire block. The street will be closed for about another week as repairs are made and several customers are without water and gas.

A man was killed trying to catch a SEPTA subway train early on Saturday morning. It happened around 1:30 a.m. at the Olney Transportation Center on North Broad Street. The man was rushing to catch a southbound train on the Broad Street Line but did not get there before the doors closed. He then tried to jump into the section of the train between two cars but fell and landed on the tracks. His body was discovered when the next southbound train came along and ran him over. He was pronounced dead at the scene. SEPTA and police did not immediately know his identity.
