Missing NJ Grandmother and Child Traveling; Drexel Professor Sends Genocide Tweet; PA Gas Tax Hike

Authorities are looking for an Atlantic County woman and her great-granddaughter after they went missing traveling from New Jersey to North Carolina for Christmas over the weekend. 71-year-old Barbara Briley and her 5-year-old great-granddaughter La Myer Briley set out to drive from Mays Landing to Morven, North Carolina to visit family. The last time the family heard from them was when they stopped for gas at an Exxon gas station in Ruther Glen, Virginia around 5:30 pm on Christmas Eve. The pair was traveling in a silver Toyota Rav 4 with New Jersey tag C80-ELS. Barbara is 5'5" tall and weighs 215 pounds. La Myar was wearing wearing a gray camo sweat hoodie and gray sweat pants. A Drexel University associate professor is under fire for a tweet he posted on Christmas Eve and a follow up on Sunday. George Ciccariello-Maher, a white professor of politics specializing in "race and racism," first tweeted to his private account on Saturday, "All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide." On Sunday he tweeted, "To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed." He has 10.5k followers and his tweets quickly spread. Ciccariello-Maher has defended himself, saying that the tweets were meant to be satirical and his critics have missed the context and content. He says that "white genocide" refers to a concept believed by white supremacists whereby the white majority and culture is being purposefully diluted through interracial relationships, immigration, multicultural policies, etc. He says, "It is a figment of the racist imagination, it should be mocked, and I'm glad to have mocked it." Judging from the tweet's response, most people didn't get the 'joke.'

Drexel became aware today of Associate Professor George Ciccariello-Maher's inflammatory tweet, which was posted on his personal Twitter account on Dec. 24, 2016. While the University recognizes the right of its faculty to freely express their thoughts and opinions in public debate, Professor Ciccariello-Maher's comments are utterly reprehensible, deeply disturbing, and do not in any way reflect the values of the University. The University is taking this situation very seriously. We contacted Ciccariello-Maher today to arrange a meeting to discuss this matter in detail

Pennsylvania's gas tax will go up 8 cents on Sunday. PA already has the highest gas taxes in the country. Taxes will go from about 70 cents to 78 cents / gallon. The gas taxes are used for road construction and infrastructure maintenance. The state has one of the largest road networks as well, larger than New York, New Jersey, and all of New England. Infrastructure projects create thousands on jobs each year.
