Chaka Fattah Gets 10 Years Prison; Fed Judge Rejects PA Recount; US Marshals Shoot Suspect in Philly

Former U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah was sentenced Monday to 10 years in federal prison for fraud and racketeering. Fattah was found guilty in the corruption and money laundering case this past summer. He was accused of taking an illegal $1 million loan to finance his campaign and then using a federal grant to pay it back. He was also charged with using other campaign money, government grants, and money from a non-profit he ran for his own personal and political needs. Fattah served as a Congressman for over 20 years, resigning after he was convicted. U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle called his crimes "astonishing" considering his household income was over $500,000 a year. The 60-year-old will have to report to prison by January 25, 2017.

A federal judge in Philadelphia rejected the Green Party-backed request for a full hand recount and forensic examination of voting machines in the state of Pennsylvania. U.S. District Judge Paul Diamond issued his 31-page decision today. He said that suspicion of a hacked election "borders on the irrational" and "most importantly, there is no credible evidence that any 'hack' occurred, and [there is] compelling evidence that Pennsylvania's voting system was not in any way compromised." He also says that granting the recount would "ensure that that no Pennsylvania vote counts" given the deadline for vote certification is on Tuesday. He called the wait by Jill Stein's lawyers to bring the suit to federal court 4 weeks after the election "unexplained and highly prejudicial." Michigan's recount was stopped by a federal judge last week. Wisconsin's recount is expected to conclude today. On Sunday, with 95 percent of the votes recounted, Clinton had gained 25 votes but still trailed Trump by 22,000.

A suspect was shot and killed by U.S. Marshals while serving a warrant in Northeast Philadelphia on Monday morning. It happened at 10:22 a.m. on the 1300 block of Hellerman Streets in Oxford Circle. Marshals were serving a warrant in connection to a shooting back in July. The suspect drew a weapon on agents and they fired back. No agents were injured. The weapon was recovered. Philadelphia Police and U.S. Marshals are investigating.
