Package Explodes in Center City; Officer Charged w/ Shooting Son; NJ/PA Tax Agreement Back On

Officials are investigating after a suspicious package exploded inside a man's apartment in Center City early Tuesday morning. It happened around 4 a.m. on the 1800 block of Pine Street. The 62-year-old victim opened the manila envelope in his kitchen and triggered the blast. He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with chest and hand injuries. He is in stable condition. Police believe that he was targeted in the attack. The envelope was addressed to him, but the postal bar code indicates it could not have been mailed, but probably placed at the residence. They say this was not an act of terrorism. The Philadelphia bomb squad, ATF, and postal inspectors are investigating.

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer who shot his 19-year-old son during an altercation inside his Northeast Philadelphia home has been charged. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced the arrest of Dorian Young today. He has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangering of another person, and possession of an instrument of crime. It happened on September 5th at 6:30 p.m. on the 2700 block of Taunton Street. Young was angry with his son, Devine Young, over use of the family car. A physical altercation ensued. Dorian pulled his gun and fired twice, hitting his son in the back once. He was taken to the hospital where his spleen was removed. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has suspended Young with the intent to dismiss within 30 days. Williams said, "If you are a Philadelphia Police Officer, elected official or private citizen; you cannot use your gun to try to end an argument. And if you do, as I have said many times before, no matter your career or station in life, you will be charged fairly and to the fullest extent of the law for such a dangerous act."

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will now keep a decades old tax agreement with Pennsylvania after a hole in NJ's 2017 budget was fulfilled. The 39-year-old accord allows people who live in one state but work in another pay taxes in the just state they live. If it was cancelled, workers would have to pay taxes in both. It would have hurt low income workers living in South Jersey and working in Pennsylvania, as well as high income workers living in Bucks County and working in New Jersey the most. A recent deal struck to reform the state pharmacy benefits system will save the state $200 million and addresses the budget deficit. If Christie had canceled the agreement, NJ would have been able to collect $180 million in income taxes from Pennsylvania workers.
