SEPTA Union Vote Today on Contract; Woman Shoots Friend Mistaken as Intruder; Body Found on Sidewalk

Thousands of SEPTA union bus, trolley, and subway drivers are voting today on the tentative agreement struck between union leadership and SEPTA management last week. The agreement ended a 6-day strike just before Election Day. TWU Local 234 president Willie Brown sent a letter to union members telling them this is the best deal they could get from the cash strapped, publically funded transit agency. The new 5-year contract features 10.5% wages increases, pension increases of up to 15.2 percent, and a "Cadillac" healthcare plan w/ employee contributions. The average SEPTA worker makes between $60-80,000 / year. There are some detractors among the 4,700 workers who think they should have gotten more. If the contract is not ratified, there will not be another strike, the two factions would be forced back into negotiations. Brown is confident the union members support the deal, but is worried about voter turnout. Polls are open until 7pm at 20 different locations. Results should be known on Friday night. A Mercer County, NJ, woman shot and killed a man last night she believed was an intruder in her home, but was actually her friend trying to surprise her. It happened around 11:23 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Genesee Street and East Park Avenue in Hamilton Township. 50-year-old Kelvin Watford of Willingboro was pronounced dead at the scene with a bullet wound to his chest. The woman told police she was talking to Watford on the phone. He said he had just returned home from a trip but was not around. In the meantime, she heard dogs barking and noises outside. She grabbed her gun. The woman then said she heard someone in her house and opened her bedroom door, saw a shadowy figure on the steps, and fired once. Officials believe Watford was trying to surprise her. No charges have been filed. The investigation continues.

Philadelphia Police are investigating after a man's body was found on the sidewalk in the city's Holmesburg section last night. Authorities were called around 6:30 pm to the 8000 block of Frankford Ave. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. The body was in front of a building with a dental office on the first floor and apartments above. Surveillance footage from the building shows three people (2 men, 1 woman) dragging the deceased out of the building and onto the sidewalk. Two people have been taken into custody. Police are also looking for three other people who jumped out of the back of the building when police arrived.
