Star Career Academy Closes, PPA Suffers Financial Hit, Man Sentenced To Life For Murder

The Star Career Academy which has campuses in Philadelphia as well as New Jersey, announced Tuesday that it will be shutting it's doors effective immediately and all future classes have since been cancelled. The school is closing due to "the result of the negative financial impact of a continued declining student population while operating in the challenging for-profit post-secondary school industry." Now over a thousand students face an uncertain future as many of them were days away from finishing their courses, and some are now stuck with thousands of dollars of student loans and nothing to show for it.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority had their monthly meeting on Tuesday, and during the meeting the board got bad news about its efforts to help citizens during the SEPTA strike. The PPA has lost over 700 thousand dollars while helping commuters by offering discounted rates at parking garages, grace periods at meters, and having timed spaces for commuters. Acting Director of the PPA, Clarena Tolson, stated that "It was certainly important that the Parking Authority be a partner in that process and at the end of the day, I think we offered a great opportunity for people to be able to access the city." Tolson also stated that revenue changes will be coming since the state has now allowed Uber and Lyft to operate in the City.

A Philadelphia man was sentenced today for the shooting and killing of his ex-girlfirend's father. 21-year-old Naadir Abdul Ali is sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 10-20 years for the murder of 53-year-old Kevin Brown that took place last fall in the family's Lower Moreland Home. Officials say that Ali and another man broke into the family's home in the middle of the night. Both men went upstairs and when Brown stood up to them to protect his family that is when Ali shot and killed him. Prosecutor Tom McGoldrick stated that Brown was a hero for his actions, and that Ali was a vengeful and paranoid man. Ali stated that he is sorry for the family's loss, but still claims he didn't kill anybody.
