| BREAKING: Republican Donald Trump Elected 45th President of the United States |

Republican Donald Trump has won Tuesday's general election and will become the 45th President of the United States. Trump broke through the 270 electoral vote goal early on Wednesday morning. The Republican surprised many and outperformed many analysts by taking the key states of Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Trump will be moving from Trump Tower on 5th Ave. in Manhattan to the White House on Pennsylvania Ave in Washington, DC. The longtime New York real estate mogul/businessman turned reality show producer burst on to the political scene in the spring of 2015 to run for president with the announcement he would build a southern wall. Immigration, the economy, healthcare, energy, taxes, trade, and national defense were big issues during the campaign for Trump. Trump has called for big changes especially when it comes to our immigration policies (ie. The Wall and mass deportations), trade with foreign countries, military growth, fight against terrorism, replacing Obamacare, and taxes.
Donald Trump bested career politician Hillary Clinton. Clinton went from the Arkansas Governor's mansion to the White House, to the Senate to the Cabinet, an impressive resume as anyone running for the highest office. But, controversy and scandal followed her every step of the way up the ladder. Trump beat out a large field of Republican candidates in a long primary fight to gain the party's nomination. Trump's campaign defied all odds with it's humor and candor, especially when it was boorish and vile. Trump had been accused of being racist, sexist, xenophobic, and more. Clinton was accused of being untrustworthy, self centered, a liar, and prone to scandal. To many it was a choice of two evils. One of the longest, heavily contested, and divisive races in history is finally over and now the country can move on.
In his victory speech from the Hilton in New York City, Trump congratulated Clinton on a hard fought campaign. He said now is the time for us all to come together as a nation. He also thanked all of those who helped his campaign. Just a few blocks away at the Javits Center in New York, Clinton had declined to address supporters. Campaign Director John Podesta told those gathered to go home that they'll have more to say tomorrow. Clinton did call Trump to congratulate him and concede the race.
There were several other key races and ballot questions decided at the polls on Tuesday of interest to our area. Incumbent Republican Pat Toomey kept his seat in the US Senate despite a feirce fight from Democratic challenger Katie McGinty. Democrat Josh Shapiro won the race for Pennsylvania Attorney General, an office left in shambles by the convicted Kathleen Kane. In Pennsylvania, Bob Brady (D)I, Dwight Evans (D), Ryan Costello (R)I, Patrick Meehan (R)I, and Brian Fitzpatrick(R) won seats in Congress. Pennsylvanians also voted "yes" to expand judges' mandatory retirement age to 75. In New Jersey, Donald Norcross (D)I, Frank LoBiondo (R)I, Tom MacArthur (R)I, Chris Smith (R)I, and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D)I are headed back to the House. Voters selected "no" to expand casino gambling to other parts of the state. They also selected “yes†to funnel all new gas tax revenue to the Transportation Trust Fund. |
