Assaults Near Temple Univ., Man Jumps in Schuylkill From Cops, Penn State Celebration Causes Damage

Police are investigating four violent incidents that happened off of Temple University's campus that involved a large group of teens. Investigators say that the incidents began when a message was sent out to the group of teens to meet at Temple's Pearl Theater. From there they split up into smaller groups, that's when they started causing trouble. One of the incidents was a robbery that took place at 1400 Oxford Street, as well as an assault on two pedestrians at 1700 Cecil B. Moore, an assault on two police officers at 1900 N. Broad Street, and a police horse was punched in the face. The incidents all occurred between 8-10 pm. Four teens were arrested from the assaults, and police are still searching for other teens that may have been involved.

Police have now apprehended a man that was on the run from them and jumped into the Schuylkill River on Monday afternoon. Officers say they were chasing the man on foot when he jumped into the river near the Haws Avenue Bridge in Norristown at around 3 pm. A water rescue team had to be sent out into the Schuylkill to retrieve the man. Once he was taken out of the river, he was then placed under police custody. As of now, it is not known what crime the man had committed.

Officials say that after the huge victory for Penn State on Saturday night over No. 2 Ohio State, the celebrating fans cause about $18,000 worth of damage to public property. Police say that around 5,000-10,000 students gathered in downtown State College to celebrate and ended up pulling down five street lights, damaged the street light globes, and took down around 20 street and stop signs. It's not clear how much private property damage was done, but one car was damaged, and some furniture was set on fire. Police are currently investigating the incidents.
