Faculty at 14 Pennsylvania state universities went on strike at 5 a.m. this morning after late night contract negotiations failed to reach a deal with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. More than 100,000 students are affected by the strike. The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, APSCUF, represents about 5,500 faculty and coaches at the State System universities. Those schools include: Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and West Chester Universities of Pennsylvania. Students at those schools were told to report to class on Wednesday, anyway, as not all teachers would choose to strike. All other services at the schools would remain open. Students are concerned, especially those close to graduation, about how long this may last and if they will be able to finish their course load on time. The union has been without a contract since June of last year. They are fighting for raises, health care, and work rules. Pennsylvania Governor Wolf released this statement.
