Man Falls 45 ft in Trash Pit Dies; USS Murtha Commissioned; 2 Police Shot, 1 injured in Palm Springs

Thousands gathered at Penn's Landing on Saturday morning to see the commissioning ceremony of the U.S. Navy's newest amphibious warship. The USS John P. Murtha is named after the late US Congressman from the 12th District of Pennsylvania. Murtha was the longest serving congressman in state history representing southwestern PA for 35 years. He was also a US Marine. The naming has drawn controversy. Murtha has been attached to several political scandals over the years. Public tours will be available on Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m., then 1 to 4 p.m. No flip flops or sandals. Government ID required.

A Bala Cynwyd man was killed on Saturday after falling 45 feet into a trash pit while unloading garbage in Lower Merion. It happened just before 1 p.m. at the Robert J. Koegel Public Works Complex on the 1300 block of North Woodbine Avenue in Penn Valley. The Lower Merion Refuse Department was accepting trash and recycling as part of a Fall Clean-up Event. The 68-year-old man was unloading trash from a U-Haul truck when he fell. Rescuers were able to get the man out and take him to Lankenau Hospital Trauma where he was pronounced dead. The event was cancelled for the rest of the day. It will reopen Sunday at 8 a.m.

The Police chief in Palm Springs, CA, says that two officers were shot and killed and another was wounded while responding to a domestic disturbance on Saturday afternoon. Two officers were dispatched to a home after a female called saying her adult son was causing a disturbance. When they arrived he refused to open the door and threatened to shoot through the door. Ten minutes later an emergency assistance was broadcast. 68-year-old Officer Jose Gilbert Vega and 27-year-old Officer Lesley Zerebny were killed. Vega was a 35-year veteran who was set to retire in December. He was married and had 8 children. Zerebny has been with the department for over a year. She was married and just returned to work after giving birth 4 months ago. At this time the suspect has not been arrested. They do not know if he is still baricaded in the house or on the run.
