Colonial Pipeline Gas Prices, Heart Patient Infections, St. Laurentius Church Fate

You may have noticed that gas prices are on the rise at a time when they're normally headed down. It's all due to a damaged pipeline. Right now, a gallon of regular is averaging $2.34 in Pennsylvania, $1.99 in New Jersey and $2.19 in Delaware. Over the last week drivers who keep a close eye on prices at the pump noticed the rate going up when it should be going down. Typically fuel stations switch to winter blend gasoline in mid-September lowering prices. But due to a leak in the colonial pipeline, that supplies gas from Texas to the east coast, AAA finds gas prices are seven cents higher than a month ago in South Jersey. Southern states felt the most severe impact of the pipeline leak with the price of gas in parts of Georgia up 27 cents from a week ago. Some stations ran out of gas and there are widespread complaints of price gouging. But, there is good news. Tuesday a spokesperson for Colonial said a bypass pipeline is almost complete and gasoline should restart flowing at a normal rate on Wednesday.

Officials at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia say four heart patients contracted infection. They say the infections were contracted from a specific mission that helps to support the heart and lungs during major surgeries. Penn officials say the equipment has been removed. They add that the risk to other patients is minimal. Any other patients, who may have been impacted by the equipment, are being contacted by the medical center. The state health department is aware of 21 cases of these bacterial infections in three hospitals.

Neighbors are feuding over the fate of a shuttered church in Fishtown. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia closed St. Laurentius Church in 2014 because of structural issues and it has remained vacant since. Nearly 300 people filled the basement of Holy Name Church to discuss the future of St. Laurentius just a few blocks away. Developer Leo Voloshin is proposing preserving the exterior of the church and building 23 one-bedroom apartments inside. He said the archdiocese approached him about the project. Voloshin is seeking the cityâ€™s approval to rezone the church from single-family to multi-family residential. But the opposition at the meeting was vocal, with neighbors citing lack of parking, strain on the sewer system and loss of community space.
