Trump Child Care Plans, Kenney Addresses U.N., Hillary Resumes Campaign Thursday

Donald Trump rolled out a plan Tuesday aimed at making child care more affordable, guaranteeing new mothers six weeks of paid maternity leave and suggesting new incentives for employees to provide their workers childcare. Trump unveiled the proposals in a speech in a politically critical Philadelphia suburb as he tries to build his appeal with more moderate, independent voters - especially women. Child care is one of the biggest expenses many American families face, surpassing the cost of college and even housing in many states. Trump proposed guaranteeing six weeks of paid maternity leave to employees whose employers don't offer leave already. The campaign says the payments would be provided through existing unemployment insurance - though it has yet to spell out how the system would cover those costs. Trump's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, has called for 12 weeks parental leave for both mothers and fathers paid for by taxes on the wealthy.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney travels to New York on Wednesday to address the United Nations. Mayor Kenney will address IMPACT 2030, a global sustainability effort, but heâ€™ll be talking about reducing poverty, and his hopes for universal pre-K and community schools to accomplish that in Philadelphia. He'll follow that up with an address, the next day, at Johns Hopkinsâ€™ 21st Century Cities symposium.

Hillary Clinton will return to the campaign trail Thursday delivering remarks in Greensboro, North Carolina, her campaign announced Tuesday. The Democratic nominee, who was recently diagnosed with pneumonia, spent Tuesday at her home in Chappaqua, New York, where she watched President Barack Obamaâ€™s stump speech in Philadelphia on her behalf. She has no events Wednesday. Clinton was initially eyeing a return to the campaign trail as soon as Wednesday, with aides scouting for a location to deliver a possible speech on the economy. But as the day wore along Tuesday, a person close to the campaign said, it became clear that Clinton would rest for at least one more day.
