PA Supreme Court Hears Education Suit in Philly; Pregnant Woman Shot in Kensington; Lehigh Co Priest

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court was inside Philadelphia City Hall on Tuesday morning listening to arguments on the fair education funding lawsuit. Lawyers for the William Penn School District and 6 others as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Education presented arguments. The lawsuit alleges Pennsylvania unfairly allocates state education funds. The Supreme Court has to decide whether to allow the appeal to continue in the courts. Governor Tom Wolf and the PA Legislature believe that school budgets are a political problem that they are working on, and shouldn't be decided by the court. Commonwealth Court said the same thing last year when the suit was originally denied. The seven Supreme Court justices did not make a decision today.

Three people, including a pregnant woman, were shot Tuesday afternoon in broad daylight in Kensington. It happened at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday on the 1800 block of Thayer Street. The pregnant woman sustained gunshot wounds to her stomach and head. A male was also shot in the head and the stomach. The third victim is a 22-year-old man who was shot once in the groin area. They were all taken to Temple University Hospital by police in critical condition. No arrests have been made.

A priest in Lehigh County has been charged with possesion of child pornography. 66-year-old Msgr. John Stephen Mraz is a former pastor at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Emma's and currently lives at a retirement community for priests. In July, Mraz asked a friend and parishioner to update his two laptops. That person discovered image files of underage boys on the computer. He informed the Diocese of Allentown, who then notified the Lehigh County District Attorney. Search warrants found that Mraz had searched and downloaded images on multiple devices. He is charged with two 3rd degree felonies, Sexual Abuse of Children and Criminal Use of Communication Facility, and a first degree misdemeanor, Obscene and Other Sexual Materials and Performances. He has been released on bail.

The Diocese of Allentown released the following statement in part: â€˜Monsignor Mraz was ordained in 1975. He was a professor at the former Reading Central Catholic High School, Allentown Central Catholic High School and Vice Principal and Director of Spiritual Activities at Marian High School in Tamaqua. He was chaplain at the Newman Center at Lehigh University and Assistant Superintendant in the Diocesian Office of Education. He was pastor of the former St. Bertha Parish in Tuscarora, at Assumption B.V.M, Northhampton and since 2008 at St. Ann Parish in Emmaus.

Monsignor Mraz has been removed from public ministry and cannot present himself as the priest. Because the matter is now in the judicial system, the Diocese will withhold until further comment.â€™
