Loggerhead Turtle Rescued; Arrests in AC Xway Shooting; Wolf Pushes Pot Decriminalization

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, New Jersey is treating Loggerhead Sea Turtle after a run in with a boat propeller. Staff there rescued the 140 lb. female Thursday near the Oyster Creek Nuclear plant, after it was apparently injured by a boat propeller. The female loggerhead had been spotted on the intake pipe of the plant and a worker pushed the turtle back into the water, but she kept coming back up to rest. The full extent of her injuries is still unknown, but officials say she does appear to have partial paralysis of her rear flippers. Caretakers say she is eating well, and loves crabs. Experts are concerned about her ability to return to the sea, if she is indeed permanently paralyzed, which would prevent her from laying eggs. In that case, workers would try and find her a home at an aquarium. Anyone who spots a marine mammal that may be sick or in trouble should contact the MMSC immediately by calling (609)266-0538.

Police in New Jersey have arrested and charged five people in connection with a shootout on the Atlantic City Expressway that left one person dead, and four others injured Monday afternoon. Crime scene investigators spent Monday evening gathering evidence from a bullet riddled Ford Expedition that pulled into the parking lot at Wawa off Tilton Road near the AC airport with four people wounded inside, following a gun battle on the highway.

Pennsylvania needs to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana possession, says Democratic Governor Tom Wolf, but he remains guarded about the kind of recreational legalization that is in place elsewhere. While some municipalities have stopped arresting people for possessing small amounts and prosecutors have been downgrading it as a crime, Wolf thinks the State should act because many people are still going to prison for marijuana possession. However, he stopped short of endorsing the kind of full legalization of recreational use that has taken place for adults 21 and over in Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
