Egg Harbor Township Shootings; Eagles LB Tavarres to Sit Out Anthem; 100yo Church West Philly Burns

One person is dead and four people are injured after shootings in Egg Harbor Township, NJ this afternoon. New Jersey State Police and Egg Harbor police responded to the Wawa parking lot on Tilton Road in Egg Harbor Township, just off exit 9 of the Atlantic City Expressway around 3pm. Four injured people had driven to the store to find help in a bullet-riddled white SUV. It had its back window shot out, bullet holes in the sides, and the rear tire was shredded. They were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Atlantic City Campus. Authorities also responded to the call of another shooting victim in a car in the northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway near Exit 38. That person was deceased. Authorities say that they have recovered some ammunition and weapons. They believe the shootings happened on the Atlantic City Expressway going eastbound and that it is an isolated incident between those involved. Authorities are trying to determine how they are connected and what led to these shootings.

Philadelphia Eagles rookie linebacker Myke Tavarres has chosen to support San Fransisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and not stand up during the National Anthem when the Eagles host the Jets this Thursday for the final preseason game. Tavarres told ESPN.com that he almost didn't stand at Saturday's game vs. the Colts, but that he will be sitting down at Lincoln Financial Field this week. Kaepernick caused a stir when he stayed on the bench during the "The Star Spangled Banner." He said, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Tavarres feels he is in a position to take a stand and make a statement, and without a contract, endorsements, or other deals he has nothing to lose, except maybe another opportunity. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins said that he understands where Kaepernick is coming from but, “If you want change and you want things to get better across the country, there’s different ways to go about it.”

UPDATE: Tavarres has changed his mind and will stand during the National Anthem.

“I want to apologize for the distraction I’ve become to all of Eagle Nation,” Tavarres said in the statement. “I feel passionate about racial issues going on in our country and I thought that sitting during the National Anthem would bring more awareness to this issue and encourage more constructive discussion to find solutions, but I feel I only made things worse. I want to make change in this world, but sitting down during the national anthem just isn’t the best way to do it. With that being said, I do plan on finding a better way. I’m young and I still have a lot to learn about saying and doing the right thing. For now, I will stay focused on football; but I will definitely look for opportunities to do what I can to prevent injustices. I am so blessed to be an American and I just feel a responsibility to do what I can to make things better.”

A four alarm fire destroyed much of an over 100-year-old church in West Philadelphia Monday morning. Fire was first reported around 9 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church on the 6400 block of Lansdowne Avenue. Two people were inside when it started but they got out without injuries. There was also a daycare in the back but everyone was safe. It took several hours to bring the fire under control. Over 120 firefighters and 40 pieces of equipment were on the scene. Firefighters worked hard to save neighboring buildings and homes. The cause of the blaze is not immediately known. The pastor says that five other congregations rent time in the church. He says that they will rebuild.



Actor Gene Wilder has passed away at age 83. Wilder starred in many films perhaps best known for 1971's “Willy Wonka”, as well as Mel Brooks' classics 'Young Frankenstein,' 'Blazin' Saddles,' and 'The Producers.'
